I find people have the same problem with male or female relationships. If you know ur good friends go for it. You already know so much about him. Whats better then that you could find a healthy fun relationship.
As of the spandex thing if he cares about you then it wont be a big deal. he will except your spandex fetish and most likly wear it for you cause he cares for you. In all my past and present relations everyone has been understanding.
