I've never heard of the sizes 1, 2, 3, 4.

Lycra cycle shorts have a totally different feel than speedos. They are at their best when totally brand new. I always buy a size smaller, whether it's shorts, bib shorts, or tights. I strongly prefer pads too, but be careful! Some pads are poorly designed and do not conform or fold with the body well. (With speedos, on the other hand, I might buy a size larger.)

I don't see any benefit by spending US$100 for a pair of shorts. By the same token, avoid the cheapest, such as those bargain models under US$20. The two I bought one time just didn't feel right, and the pads were bulky and lacked give.
