Like I said, I don't know why, and his suit was nylon rather than spandex, but I really was touched by the picture of Mark Spitz with his stars-and-stripes suit and all those gold medals.
I think it was the times back then. I knew just too many people who were really conservative and didn't think men should wear "bikini" type speedos (even though Mark's speedo was hardly a bikini, and probably was 3-4 inches at the side-seam) who had to admit that this Olympic swimmer needed the suit to be able to move as fast as he did.
For me, that was the affirmation that the speedo was here to stay. People couldn't deny the Spitz accomplishments in his speedo, and we had a national hero in a speedo. What more could a speedo-loving boy like me could have wanted?!!
