Bike wear is common place nowadays in most every city. With the recent acomplishment of Lance in the Tour de France, with all the TV coverage, IMHO I don't think you'll raise any eyebrows.
The easiest encounter is to ride your bike to a convenience store where you purchase a bottle of water. No one will look twice.
Just do it!
